MoreWith Chromium-based browsers all the rage these days, do Safari and Firefox stand a fighting chance?
When it comes to the web browser market, things have been at a relative standstill in recent years. Google's Chrome browser, which uses the open-source Chromium technology under the hood -- took the world by storm in 2008. After trouncing the once ubiquitous Microsoft Internet Explorer, Chrome soon evolved into the very thing it set out to destroy: a monopolistic portal to the internet, funded by the deep pockets of an industry titan. Chromium is indeed open-source, but that doesn't stop it from being deeply roped into Google's powerful sphere of influence. There are many concerns worth raising over the consolidation of web tech under one set of standards, and what this might mean for the future of the internet and web rendering. In the year since Chrome's release, we've seen a convergence in web browser technologies. Nearly all the major players in 2024 utilize the underlying Chromium platform. Microsoft infamously rewrote its Edge browser from the ground up to better track alongsid
Netflix sucks for 70 million people and will probably get worse
It was announced this week that Netflix’s subscription with ads hit a major milestone with the $6.99 plan hitting 70 million monthly users up significantly from the 40 million monthly ad-supported users Netflix reported in May. And while Netflix is currently celebrating this number, I wouldn't be so quick to bust out the champagne. I currently get the ad-supported version of Netflix for free as a T-Mobile wireless subscriber. However, I always tell people who ask me if they should downgrade to this cheaper option that if I were paying even one dollar for the ad-supported version of Netflix, I would cancel it. And it's not just because of the constant ads (though those are annoying too), the real problem is the availability of content. Because of Netflix's varied licensing deals, a lot of popular shows and movies cannot be streamed at all on Netflix's cheapest plan. This mostly applies to movies, with hundreds of films from cult classics like Zombieland to more recent hits like Spid
Which streaming services do you still find enjoyable?
In my house, we aren't afraid to swap from one streaming service to the next for a few months at a time. Sometimes, it's to save money, but other times, it's because we feel burnt out and haven't clicked on a particular streaming service for quite some time. Our most consistent streaming services are Disney+ and Hulu. Having a little one means Disney+ is probably going to be a staple for an extended period of time, but Hulu can't help but stick around. We'll occasionally find a series on Amazon Prime or Paramount+, but I can't tell you the last time we paid for Netflix. Are we missing out? Do you have a preferred streaming service that's always in your rotation?
